What platform or operating systems
(OS) does Hostway use? Hostway offers hosting plans on both Linux and Windows®
platforms. Our Linux hosting plans run Apache Web server software. Our
Windows Advanced Servers run Microsoft® IIS (Internet Information
Services).
What do I need to use Hostway's
Web hosting services? If you are viewing this page, then you have all that is
required to take advantage of Hostway's services—a computer with
an Internet connection. To get your site up and running, you will also
need some basic software for creating a Web site (HTML editor) and some
method of transferring your Web site to the server (FTP client). For more

Does Hostway offer dial-up access
to the Internet? No. You will need to contact your local Internet Service
Provider (ISP) for local dial-up access to the Internet, someone such
as UKOnline or Tiscali.
Does Hostway support Microsoft
Access, ASP and SQL Server? What about FrontPage? These features are specific to Microsoft Windows and are supported
through our Windows Web hosting options. For more information, see the

Does Hostway support ColdFusion? ColdFusion is available on Windows platforms. For detailed

What technical support does Hostway
offer ? Our experienced support team is available 24 hours a day
via email and from 8:00 A.M. to 8:00 P.M. GMT via phone 7 days a week
to assist you with any problems that may arise with your Hostway hosting
account. The vast majority of support issues reported via email is responded
to and resolved within the first hour. How do we know that our customers
like our service? Thirty-five percent of our new orders are either referrals
or additional orders from existing customers.
Does Hostway also design Web pages? Hostway does not provide Web site design services. However,

with your requirements and we will be happy to point you in the right
direction.
What kind of connection does Hostway
have to the Internet backbone? Three separate carriers connect Hostway in the UK. Our
primary connection is backed by OC2 (100 Mbit) with Easynet, who operate
one of the largest European backbones. A second connection, peered through
BGP4, allows no single point of carrier failure and is provided by Cable
& Wireless through a DS3 (45Mbit) connection. A third fail-over connection
is provided by Global Crossing at throttled DS3 (34Mbit).
What is the typical Hostway server
configuration ? Hostway's minimum server configuration is a Dual Intel®
Pentium® III machine with Ultrawide SCSI HDD. Unlike many of our competitors
who employ inexpensive IDE drives, our Ultrawide SCSI hard drives ensure
superior server performance and reliability. Servers are equipped with
RAID 1 and have a minimum of 1024 MB RAM.
Does
Hostway offer a shopping cart? Hostway offers Merchant Manager. Merchant Manager is Hostway's
own browser-based storefront and catalogue development tool that integrates
cataloguing, product maintenance, category management, shopping basket
and order and credit card processing. The software is organised as to
provide functionality without any changes to the core system. You can
use the browser-based interface to build and manage your store, or you
can "get under the hood" to customise the cart with simple HTML.
Merchant Manager, which is offered with our ecommerce plans, provides a secure environment for your customers to make purchases and for you to manage your orders all from one place. For more information, see the Ecommerce FAQ.
Can I securely accept credit card
information through my Web site? Yes. All of our plans offer you free access to our secure
server running SSL (Secure Sockets Layer). This enables users of your
site to submit credit card information with confidence, knowing that is
it being transmitted safely and securely through the Internet. For more

Is it possible to process credit
card transactions in real time? For this, we recommend that you choose our ecommerce
plans. You need three things to process credit card payments in real time:
• A merchant account • A real-time credit card processing account • A shopping cart that supports your real-time credit card processing solution You can obtain a merchant account and a real-time credit card processing account via your local bank or from a major provider such as CyberCash, WorldPay, NetBanx or AuthorizeNet. Does Hostway provide any database
solutions? Hostway's Linux platforms provide support for MySQL. MySQL
is free with Gold Plans and above. Hostway's Windows platforms support
Microsoft Access databases, which are free with Gold Plans and above.

What statistical packages does
Hostway offer? Hostway provides Analog, a browser-based, Web site statistics
analytics program and Urchin Reports. Your hosting plan also provides
you raw access logs, enabling you
to use the statistical package of your choice.
What
are referrer logs and does Hostway offer them? Referrer logs record the Web sites from which your visitors
reached your page. Using this information, you can fine tune your online
advertising to maximise traffic to your site. We provide this information
in the form of domain names of the referring pages (not IP addresses),
making it easier to interpret and analyse. Hostway offers referrer logs
as an option for £2 per month.
Does Hostway offer any ready-to-run
CGI scripts? Yes. Hostway offers several ready-to-run CGI scripts
with all of our plans. These scripts include FormMail and CGIEmail (for
emailing form results). Plans also include Guestbook, wwwboard (bbs)
and guest counter scripts. We are always searching for other reliable
and popular CGI scripts to make available to customers.
Does
Hostway allow cronjob/CF Schedule? Hostway may allow programs to run in the background.
These programs are considered on an individual basis and you may incur
extra charges based on system resources used and operational maintenance
required. If you want to run background programs, please contact support@hostway-uk.com
so that we can make the necessary arrangements.
Does Hostway support third-level
domains (mydomain.yourdomain.com)? Hostway support third-level domains, such as yourname.yourdomain.com, with any of our Web hosting plans. However, we do not allow sub-directory pointers or sub-domains.
What is Hostway's
policy on upgrading OS or other software that comes with the hosting
plan? You probably have some experience with upgrading software.
If so, you are probably also aware of some of the pitfalls involved
with such an upgrade. As we are responsible for the reliability and
stability of hundreds of thousands of Web sites and email systems, we
are very careful when it comes to modifying our software. As a matter
of policy, we do not roll out the latest changes unless it is subjected
to our extensive internal testing for at least several months. Also,
we believe that it is wise to let the new release "burn in"
for several months, rather than roll out the changes right away. Of
course, there are some exceptions to this, such as when security holes
are identified and new patches released to them. In these cases, we
apply the patches right away.
